Kayak Rescue Practice

November 8 @ 8:30 am – 12:00 pm

Everyone is responsible for their own safety

Our club always emphasizes safety on our paddles. We check weather and surf forecasts beforehand. We use PFDs and VHF radios. We assign lead and sweep paddlers and check on each other during the paddle. But, as club kupuna Chuck Erhorn preaches with a passion, everyone is responsible for their own safety. To be responsible, every paddler should be able to get back into their kayak when they huli. Every paddler should also be able to assist other paddlers when they need help.

What will we practice?

At this event we will practice our kayak rescue skills. These skills include self rescue, assisted rescue, bailing out a flooded kayak and towing. We will begin with instructions on the beach going over rescue techniques, but the bulk of the session will be spent getting wet on the water. The goal will be for all participants to be confident that they can get back in their kayak on their own and assist others if needed.

Who is this for?

We encourage all kayakers, from novice to advanced levels to attend this event. Experienced kayakers, even if you’re confident that you can self rescue you will benefit by practicing your assistance skills. You can also share your knowledge and help us all get better.

When, where and what should you bring?

We’ll meet at Keʻehi Lagoon at 8:30 am and start practice at 9:00 am. Come earlier if you want the best parking or if you know you need extra time to setup. Bring your PFD, bowline or tow rope and bilge pump. Also if you know you need a device like a stirrup, ladder or paddle float to self rescue bring those things too.

Watch some helpful videos

Here are some videos that demonstrate self rescue techniques.

At the 2:00 mark on this video he shows how to use a paddle float.

This one shows a self rescue ladder. The underwater shots are very informative. Ignore the comments at the end regarding a stand up assist rope unless you have a kayak that you can stand up in.
